Rehabilitation of the Nieuwe Haven - Paramaribo

The Nieuwe Haven is the main port facility in Surinam with respect to general cargoes and containers. The port was constructed 40 years ago and has not been significantly changed since then. The lay out of the port is no longer conclusive to modern cargo handling operations and the facility has badly deteriorated. A feasibility study was carried out to restore the port. It resulted in a rehabilitation plan together with a new layout as well as a new organizational structure for port operations.

The detailed design of the rehabilitation works comprise:

  • Repair of piles and construction of new deck (25.000 m2)
  • New front beam, new bollards and new fendering systems
  • Demolition of all but two of the sheds, which will be restored
  • New utility infrastructure including electricity, lighting, stormwater drainage, fire fighting, sewerage and reefer systems
  • New pavement over the complete area (50.000 m2)

After the detailed design, a tender document was prepared, based on EU general conditions. Future activities will include:

  • Assistance during tendering
  • Contract management and supervision

The contracting party for the project was PMC. The feasibility study was carried out jointly with PMC, the Port of Rotterdam, the NEI and ACE Consultants. The design and engineering was carried out under the responsibility of Lievense in close cooperation with ACE.
