Navigation lock Venice (Malamocco)

To protect the city of Venice during periods of high water in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, the three entrances of the Venetian lagoon will be equipped with flood barriers. Since, during operational periods, the barriers will form an obstacle for vessels entering or leaving the lagoon, the barriers will be provided with navigation locks. In total three locks are foreseen.

As a part of this overall Venice project, a navigation lock for vessels up to 140.000 DWT is required for the Malamocco inlet. A lock with a length of 340 m and a width of 45 m is capable to lock the traffic volume. At both ends of the lock, ship guiding beams guide the ships and protect the lock from being damaged.

Lievense Consulting Engineers is the engineering consultant for the conceptual design. This conceptual design of the civil works comprises the ship guiding beams, the lock wall (inclusive anchor walls), the walls of the gate house, the walls of the building pit for the gate house, and the floor of the gate house (inclusive the concrete floor with pulling piles).
