Multi-user port development Chatham, Trinidad

The National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago decided to develop a new multi-user port near Chatham on the Gulf of Paria in Irois Bay, west of the port facilities of Brighton (La Brea) and Point Fortin. The first customer Alcoa intends to erect an aluminium smelter, other use of the industrial estate connected with the new port may include ammonia or methanol production or LNG liquefaction and exportation.

Lievense Consulting Engineers won the assignment for the preparation of this port development. The work includes execution of a feasibility study and preliminary environmental impact assessment, completed by selection of the best design concept in view of construction, operational and maintenance cost as well as nautical and environmental considerations, specifically with regard to prevention of increased coastal erosion.

The second phase of Lievenses services includes detailed geotechnical surveys, mooring analyses, structural engineering, preparation of a final tender reference design, tender preparation and tender procedure assistance.

The quay wall shall accommodate large sea going vessels and is designed as a suspended deck on piles with scour protection as shown in the figure below.
