Successor Mines, Klaverblad Mine Successor Mines, Klaverblad Mine, Suriname For the exploration of bauxite BHP Billition Maatschappij Suriname is developing the Successor Mines, north-east of Paranam. Part of this development is the excavation of a mine at Klaverblad on the east bank of the river. To prevent flooding of the 30 m deep open mine pit from the river a 1300 m long separation structure is to be constructed. The southern part of this protective structure consists of a stretch of clayey river bank stabilised by a 30 m wide sand dam, the northern part consists of a 24 m wide cofferdam. The rest of the mine boundary is protected against flooding from the swampy surroundings by the construction of a ring dyke. A permanent drainage system is being installed along the mine boundary: in the ring dyke, the sand dam and the cofferdam.
BHP BMS commissioned Lievense to review the design of the separation structure and to prepare specifications and tender documents for the various construction contracts: for the mine pit dredging contract, for the cofferdam construction contract and for the permanent dewatering contract. Lievense also carried out a ship collision risk assessment for the structural integrity of the cofferdam and provided specialist geotechnical advice. During construction Lievense provided construction supervision and technical and contractual support to the client.
