Widening roadbridge Kapelle The Water Board Zeeuwse Eilanden is planning to create a bicycle route south-east of Kapelle. The route will cross the A58 motorway by way of a bridge. The existing road bridge is too narrow to accommodate a bicycle track. The project involves a study into the possibilities for widening the bridge, taking into account the Eurocodes and the management and maintenance of the bridge.

This study consisted of:
establishing the minimal required width evaluating the structural options for widening the bridge analysis of the old design calculations comparison with the current and future design codes evaluation of the acceptability of the new loads development of alternative options cost estimates The developed solution is the relocation of the railings to the side of the bridge deck, and the creation of extra space by an outward curvature of the railings. Safety and aesthetics have been combined by applying a curved transparent screen.
