Land reclamation Cole Bay, St. Maarten The purpose of the land reclamation is to offer expansion possibilities to companies which are currently active in the area and also to relocate companies located at “Over the Pond East”, adjacent to the Great Salt Pond. This relocation will signifi-cantly improve the environmental conditions and reduce noise and traffic nuisance in the greater Philipsburg area.
The reclamation project in Cole Bay project comprises 14 ha land development including shallow draft harbour facilities. The small berthing facility is to serve the companies to be located at the land development directly. Cargo handled will be mainly building material. The land reclamation will shall be used for:
- port area (0,5 ha)
- relocating industries such as contractors, concrete and asphalt factories and importers of building materials, presently located east of the Salt pond (3,3 ha)
- expansion of GEBE (3,14ha) and Sol (1,2 ha)
- reservation for a sewage treatment plant (1,5 ha)
- green zone, public areas (beach), roads and revetment
Following earlier proposals and studies for the last 15 years Lievense has under-taken a feasibility study and developed a master plan for the industrial and port development in Cay Bay quarter including land reclamation in the adjacent Cole Bay. Also a drainage study and an environmental impact study were carried out.
