Development of the IJsselmeer Dam

In 2008 the Dutch Ministry of Public Works held a competition to make a plan to develop the IJsselmeer Dam into a new Dutch Icon. This dam is separating the IJssel lake from the sea and has a length of 30 km. The reason for this competition is the sea level rise and the necessary upgrading of the dam as well as its locks and movable gates. Key words for this plan are: durable energy – mobility – ecology – safety.

In close co-operation with several prominent Dutch companies Lievense made a very innovative, creative, state of the art plan for a natural dam.

The plan consists of a second dam creating new space. The existing dam keeps its function as a transport corridor allowing traffic to travel from A to B but also includes extra capacity for the shipping locks as well as the floodgates.

The new dam has various possibilities, i.e. durable energy and energy storage, high-grade mobility (Superbus) taking into account the conservation of the surrounding environment.
