Bakhuis - Apoera Infrastructure, Suriname

 

Mining operations at the Bakhuis mountains in west Suriname should provide the refinery at Paranam with bauxite over the coming decades. Lievense was assigned by BHP Billiton Maatschappij Suriname to undertake a field assessment survey and make an assessment of the 25 years old and never used road and rail infrastructure between Bakhuis and Apoera on the Corantijn river and to propose rehabilitation and design of infrastructural works and facilities.

These included: drainage restoration/improvement along the entire alignment, road re-alignment and restoration, rail refurbishment, road-rail crossings, bridges crossing the Nickerie river, rail unloading facilities and barge loading facilities at Apoera, berthing and barge unloading facilities at Paranam on the Suriname river.
