Deep Sea Quay for OVET nearing completion

To accommodate more bulk carriers (Capesize 325 x 50 x17,5 m) bulk handling specialist Ovet has decided to increase the lengths of their berthing facilities in Flushing. This has resulted in the construction of 400 m quay wall with a retaining height of 20 m.

The new quay wall is placed in front of the original quay for smaller vessels. Loading and unloading of the Capesize vessels will be done by floating cranes. This reduces the required retaining height of the quaywall to 20 m instead of 26 m and therefore limits construction costs.

Specific attention has been paid to determine the feasibility of driving the 35 m long and 1820 mm diameter tubular piles through dense sand layers.

An impressed current cathodic protection system will be implemented to achieve the required 40 year lifetime of the structure.
