History of Lievense

Our firm was founded in 1964 by Mr. L.W. Lievense. After a period of professional development at the Directorate-General of Public Works and Water Management, where he worked on the Delta Works, his real entrepreneurship revealed itself and he started his engineering consultancy. Soon he got well-known for his innovative solutions for national problems: he found a solution for gas-transportation under the Western Scheldt estuary and in 1981 he proposed to use part of lake IJssel, the “Markermeer” lake for flexible storage of energy to balance the daily fluctuations in electrical energy demand. This “Plan Lievense” gave him national recognition and reputation.
Port and waterways development really started in 1974 with the expansion of the marine loading & unloading facilities for DOW Chemical in the Braakman harbour at Terneuzen. From then Lievense was involved in most of the major port developments in Vlissingen and Terneuzen, now managed by Zeeland Seaport Authority, and DOW is still one of our regular customers.

In 2000 our monumental office building “The Anchor”, right in the city centre of Breda, could no longer accommodate the growing staff of Lievense Consulting Engineers and we moved to the edge of the old city centre to an up-to-date working environment.

Lievense today
Today Lievense more and more develops an all-round profile in engineering in a wide working field: ports, waterways, water management, civil structures, pipeline infrastructure and pipeline management. At present Lievene has 80 employees.

The near future and Lievense
Lievense keeps on growing! In 2005 we took over the Rotterdam based firm Port Management Consultants and recently we started a branch office in Rotterdam to strengthen our business in the largest port sector of the world. This is also the home base of LievenseAdriaens, which was established in 2005 to provide pipeline maintenance services in the region. We expect that this will be soon one of our fast growing business units.

Internationally we are growing as well: in 2005 we opened branch offices in Belgium and St. Maarten, in 2006 we started an office in Trinidad. The Caribbean is an excellent area with expansion promises for Lievense because of the many development needs in the field of water management, coastal engineering and port development.
